What Is It?
Age and sun damage on the skin manifests in 3 main ways, the appearance of visible and broken capillaries, increased or irregular pigmentation (hyperpigmentation), and the loss of collagen that supports the skin with the formation of wrinkles.
Rejuvenation of the skin of the face, neck, chest, arms and hands is now possible by using the recently introduced IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Systems of laser therapy. This special light is scanned across the area being treated, reducing or removing these signs of damage, leaving the skin looking clearer, smoother and healthier.
How Does It Work?
All laser and IPL systems work by specifically targeting undesirable features to remove them. This is done by a process called "selective photothermolysis", which means using selected wavelengths of light ('photons') that will pick out that target, heating it ('thermal') and destroying it ('lysis') -hence the term "selective photo (use of light) -thermo (to heat) -lysis (With destruction)" of the target.
For example, to remove red capillaries selectively without affecting other structures in the skin you need to select a wavelength of light that is best absorbed by red only (the colour of your target, the capillaries) so that when it is applied to the skin surface it will be selectively absorbed by the capillaries alone to instantly heat and seal them off permanently. Similarly, to remove abnormal skin pigmentation another wavelength of light is selected that is best absorbed by dark colour only (the colour of your target, abnormal skin hyperpigmentatlon) so that when it is applied to the skin surface will be selectively absorbed by this alone to remove it while leaving other skin structures unaffected.
Laser and IPL systems can also be used to stimulate (rather than remove) and there are, for example, some wavelengths of light that can be used to stimulate the fibroblast cells (the cells that produce collagen and elastin) in the skin, enhancing the amount of collagen and elastin there.
By using these concepts in photorejuvination technology, it is possible to select 3 wavelengths of light (one for capillary removal, one for pigment removal, and one for collagen stimulation) to be applied to the skin simultaneously to achieve these desired results together.
Since this reduces or removes the sun and age changes seen on the skin it can be correctly described as a rejuvenation treatment of the skin by IPL laser.
Is it painful?
No, it is not painful most clients experience a sensation of having some vibration over the skin to the sensation of having a rubber band plucked over the skin. Some feel no pain whatsoever.
What Conditions Can Be Treated?
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
This may range from a single treatment up to 6 or more, depending upon the extent and complexity of the problem. Most will experience some tightness over the skin as well as reduction in fine line lines and puffiness over the eyes just after one session. The best effects are seen after about 3 – 4 sessions.
How Will I Look Afterwards
This will depend on the type and extent of the skin damage. For mild damage which is predominantly capillary with little pigmentation problem present there may be only mild redness lasting a few hours. No time off work is necessary. Lunch time appointments may be arranged if so desired. For more severe damage with a lot of hyperpigmentation present there may be significant crusting afterwards, as damaged layers of the epiderrnis are picked out by the IPL and made to crust off. This may take one week to clear and should therefore be timed around social engagements if exposed areas such as the face are being treated. Once the crusts have fallen off the skin appears significantly improved.
How long will it take?
Each session of photorejuvination will take about 15 minutes. However we allow 1 hour appointment as we need to go through a thorough consultation and cleansing of the skin.
How Long Will The Benefits Last?
All clients are different with different skin types and reactions. Although the effects of photorejuvination last from 6 months to 1 year, most clients need to touch up sessions after about 6 months to 1 year. Also, as the skin continues to age and if it is not well protected from the sun, photodamage can continue to occur. As will most things, skin conditions are multifactorial and good skin is a combination of proper nutrition, good skin care and good skin protection You will be guided and assisted through every stage!
How Much Does It Cost?
This depends on the complexity and the size of the area treated. Prices start from $200.00 .
